Community of Washington Island

Community of Washington Island

Highway 42 ends at the Northport Ferry Dock.  Here you can catch the Car Ferry to Washington Island.  I suggest to bring your bike…Washington Island is wonderful for a day of biking.

HISTORY...Washington Island became a Township in 1851. It is the only inhabited island at the top of the Door County Peninsula. Settlers emigrated here from Iceland in the 1870’s. Today, Washington Island is one of the largest Icelandic communities in North America. The island was named by early American sailors. Rock Island, also off the tip of the Door County Peninsula is the site of the first lighthouse built on the Great Lakes. Built in 1836.

PLACES TO VISIT...The views of both Door County’s mainland and the islands are spectacular as you cross Death’s Door.  Plan to stop by School House Beach.  The water is crystal clear at this pebble beach, but watch out, it gets deep fast!  It is great for swimming and there’s a swim raft close to the shore.  Bob and I visit Washington Island at least once each year.  We tend to visit in the ‘off season’ and stay at the Sunset Resort for a couple of days.  They offer fabulous breakfasts and we love to cozy up to their fireplace at night.
